Incredibly,I was quick to learn after a few casts that the average size largemouthbass at this young lake is around four to five pounds. Tossingchartreuse Fat Rap crank bait, I landed five such bass in less thantwenty minutes. According to David Fields, it is not uncommon forexperienced anglers to have catches of 100 to 300 bass per day per boatweighing anywhere from 2 to 14 lbs. The current lake record, caught inMay of 2001 by Wild Bill Skinner, stands at a whopping 15 pounds 3ounces. He released this bass and it is still lurking in these waters.During that same week of fishing, Wild Bill lost a bass at the boatthat once he reviewed the video footage of the bass, firmly believesthat it would have exceeded the weight of the current world recordlargemouth bass. I reviewed the footage seeing a bass that was anestimated amazing 33 to 35 inches long.
Before we returned to thelodges boat launch site, I have caught two dozen largemouth bass, thelargest being over eight pounds. David had topped my effort, includinga lard bellied lunker that was almost 12 pounds. At the lodgeoverlooked the lake I sat watching the last golden rays of the settingsun danced on its placid surface. Catching a cool breeze off of LakeHuites we enjoyed cool beverages before dinner was served. A total offifteen other anglers were at the lodge, including four fellows who hadbrought along their pre-teen sons to fish with them. According to DavidFields, it is very common for returning anglers to bring along theirless skilled offspring as this is a great place to ensure the creationof a lifelong bass angling enthusiast.
Like all bodies of waterwhere largemouth bass are found, at Lake Huites some periods of yearare better for fishing results than are others, although it isproductive the year round. From early October until the first week orso of December, the bass at Lake Huites aggressively strike almost anyoffering cast to them. Heart stopping top water action using HeddonChuggers and Zara Spooks can be counted on in the canyon sluices beforelunch at this time. If you are looking for a ten ponder or betterthough, bottom crawling plastic worms and lizards along humps thatoften extend 100 yards into the channels is the ticket. This is also aprime area for crank bait fishing.
Beginning in January the bassbegin to make the move into their pre-spawn mode. This is when aspinner bait usually rules with plastics and crank baits doing wellalso. Between the first of the year and the peak of the spawn in March, when the pot-bellied fat girl bassettes are busting with eggs, isregarded as the number one time for trophy fishing at Lake Huites. Atthis time the largemouth bass in this South of the Border waters arevery aggressive and willing to hit most anything that is presentedbefore them in slow and deliberate fashion. The lake levels are attheir annual lowest point which serves to really concentrate the bigspawners in predictable cover. These two time periods are the mostpopular due to fishing action, and dry mild weather.
April May andJune is the rainy season when water is recollected in Lake Huites. Thisis the full pool time and the hottest temperatures for fishing. Duringlate spring anglers typically catch bass in high numbers and thewell-known really big fish of the post spawn. “This is my favorite timeto be on Lake Huites,” says David Fields. “It is beginning to get hotby midmorning then and most anglers visiting this lake from the US havecome and gone until the following autumn. At this time I have greatsuccess by slow rolling big spinner bait and digging a lipless crankbait on the bottom in deep water. Throwing a big, Bill Dance Fat FreeShad across bald points in the late afternoon is one of the mainreasons why I leave home to come fish is lake in Mexico. Giant lunkerbass are more the real than the exception throughout now and all ofMay. Oddly, it’s a ticket for sure fired action that most US bassfishermen miss out on.”
Wild Bill’s Trophy Bass Lodge located on theshores of Lake Huites is regarded as one best found along the any basslake in Mexico. It is owned and operated by American Bass Fishermen whobelieve visiting fishermen should create their own schedule. If youdon’t want to come in at traditional lunch and nap, chefs will providebox lunch. The spacious lodge and its well landscaped grounds set on ahill overlooking Lake Huites. When I arrived, my gear was stored in mylarge air-conditioned room.
