After I unpacked in my room andreached the terrace the lodge overlooking the lake, the staff I servedMexican appetizers and beverages. It was the beginning of five days ofdelicious dining prepared by the lodge chef. His culinary talentscompete strongly with the quality of the bass fishing. Breakfastusually consisted of fresh coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, baconand eggs. Lunches at the lodge consisted of cooked meals consisting ofhomemade soups, fried chicken, enchiladas, fajitas, or fried fish.Suppers were an even greater treat. Not all of the staff speaksEnglish, but they were all well versed in making me feel at home duringmy stay at Trophy Lodge.
My daily guide was the same during myentire stay and appeared to know the lake and its bass like the back ofhis own hand. He not only demonstrated his knowledge of the lake byputting me on big bass every day we fish, but also revealed experttalent in digging many bird’s nests from my bait casting reels. TrophyBass Lodge provides all anglers with roomy American-made boats that areoutfitted with 55hp outboards, trolling motors, dual batteries and gastanks and Eagle electronics. The lodge also accommodates bass fishermanif they want to explore night fishing by supplying black lights andspotlights for each boat.
My biggest bass of the trip was a twelveponder taken on a plastic worm worked from the back of a sluice alongthe main channel of the Fuerte River channel where the channel wallsnarrow to less than a stone’s throw across. I averaged over 50 bass perday, which when you consider than I really am a pretty casual bassfisherman, seemed super to me. Since that first trip I have made over adozen return trips. Even a casual bass angler like me is immediatelyhooked on the size, numbers and quality of fishing at Lake Huites. Itis the perfect place for taking dads (I have had mine there threetimes) and children.
If you fly out of the country to anywhere, including Mexico, these days you now need a passport. When packing goesself contained, especially in terms of fishing tackle and personalitems like sunscreen. I recommend medium to heavy action rods, andfishing line in the 16 to 25 pounds test range, although some anglerscome here specifically to use ultra-light tackle with great success. Ifyou like to fly fish, you will find guides who may not understandEnglish, but do understand the long rod sport. If you go, be sure tobring extra rods and reels to ensure against breakage problems.Terminal tackle needs are general and seasonal. The best thing to do iswhen booking a trip ask what the bass are hitting when you expect to bethere.
